Johanna Konta

  • In Partnership With: ASICS

The 2016 season is often talked about as something of a breakthrough year for Johanna Konta, her unprecedented success on court a sign of a player coming of age. Ask Jo, however, and she’ll tell you that it was simply another part of her tennis journey – one that’s still very much a work in progress. Her commitment to self-improvement is unrelenting, and it’s this ability to analyse, to find perspective, that puts the British No.1 in an excellent position to make this year’s Wimbledon her best yet. How far can she go? Let’s find out.

What’s your favourite part of the Wimbledon experience?

It’s really hard to narrow down, because I like so much! If I had to say a few things, I’d say I love being able to drive around and be close to home … and I love strawberries and cream!

What’s the best Wimbledon memory of your career so far?

I played a very memorable match against Genie Bouchard on Centre Court last year. We both played a high level of tennis and I was proud of the way I competed.

Last year you reached the second round. Do you think you can improve on that this year?

I would really like to stay in the tournament as long as possible, so rest assured I will be doing everything in my power to try to make that happen!

How much does the home crowd at Wimbledon help when you’re on court?

The Wimbledon crowd are fantastic – they’re always loud and encouraging for the Brits, but are still polite and understand tennis “etiquette” in supporting everyone on court. I think grass court tennis and the Wimbledon atmosphere is totally unique – you don’t experience anything quite like it in the rest of the season.

You have a new coach now, Wim Fissette. How are things going?

Wim and I work really well together: he is a calm and experienced coach who brings good energy and humour. He’s been a great addition to the team.

Has your new team brought any fresh ideas to the fitness side of things? Anything you hadn’t done before?

In the off season I got to do some cool new cross-training. We went rock climbing, trampolining, and did some yoga. The trampolining was hilarious – check out my Insta! [@jokonta91]

How are you feeling fitness-wise at the moment?

I feel great! The grass court presents new challenges for the body: it requires a lot of lower body strength and speed of foot. That’s the great thing about tennis, we’re always changing surface so there’s a new physical challenge to look forward to.

What ASICS shoes will you be wearing for the grass court season?

I always wear the GEL-Resolution 7 and for Wimbledon I have a nice new white version.

What are the key things you need from your footwear when you’re playing on grass?

Well grass court shoes have special pimpled soles to give you optimum grip on the grass, and they need to be very stable on the sides to give you optimum balance. The ASICS GEL-Resolutions do a fantastic job of keeping me balanced and speedy.

It says on Wikipedia that one of your grandfathers earned two international football caps for Hungary. If you hadn’t been a tennis player, what other sport would you have taken up?

Yes he did! I think I’d have been a runner. I always liked short distances, ever since I was a little girl. I kind of had to sacrifice running for tennis!

If you could choose any celeb to cheer you on from the Royal Box, who would it be?

Oooh, good question. Probably Jennifer Lawrence or the Duchess of Cambridge!

Johanna Konta wears the ASICS GEL-Resolution 7, featuring a redesigned Flexion Fit upper for enhanced breathability and a lowered external heel counter to keep you stable during quick movements. This year’s Wimbledon edition mixes traditional white with flashes of shining silver, and it’s available online now at
